Capria Ventures - How to fellow

From hands-on AI projects to a full-time engineering career, Praful John reflects on how the Capria Fellowship helped him build practical experience, confidence and the skills to take the next step.

Sometimes, the most important career opportunities do more than help you build technical skills. They give you the confidence, experience, mentorship, and stories you need to take the next step.

For me, the Capria Fellowship was one of those opportunities.

I worked with Capria as an AI Engineer for approximately eight months. During that time, I gained hands-on experience solving real-world problems, worked alongside talented engineers, and learned how artificial intelligence could be applied to create practical value for businesses.

The experience eventually helped me secure a full-time position as an AI Engineer at Local Asset Management.

Looking back, the fellowship was much more than another role to add to my résumé. It became an important bridge between learning about AI and building a professional career in it.

Learning by Working on Real Problems

One of the most valuable parts of the fellowship was the opportunity to work on real AI projects.

I contributed to projects for Capria’s internal teams as well as its portfolio companies. Each project introduced a different business problem, a new technical challenge, or an opportunity to explore how emerging AI capabilities could be used effectively.

The work was rarely limited to simply implementing a predefined solution. I often had to understand the problem from the beginning, evaluate possible approaches, experiment with different tools and models, and develop a solution that was both innovative and practical.

This taught me an important lesson: building successful AI solutions is not only about knowing the latest technology.

It is also about asking the right questions.

What problem are we actually trying to solve? How will the solution fit into the existing workflow? Is the output reliable and useful? Can the idea be translated into something that creates measurable value?

Working through these questions helped me develop a much stronger approach to AI engineering.

Exposure to Innovative AI Projects

Artificial intelligence is evolving incredibly quickly. New models, frameworks, tools, and techniques are introduced constantly.

At Capria, I had the opportunity to work on new and evolving AI problems and think about how cutting-edge technologies could be transformed into useful solutions. This required continuous learning, experimentation, and adaptability.

Some projects required technical implementation, while others required research, prototyping, workflow design, or evaluating whether an AI-based approach was appropriate for a particular use case.

That variety made the experience especially valuable.

Instead of learning AI only through tutorials or isolated personal projects, I was able to understand how AI systems are explored and developed in a professional environment. I learned how to move from an initial idea to a working solution while considering usability, accuracy, business requirements, and technical limitations.

Each project helped me become more comfortable working with uncertainty — something that is especially important in a rapidly changing field such as AI.

Growing Alongside Great Engineers

Another major highlight of the fellowship was the opportunity to work alongside talented engineers.

Being surrounded by people who were thoughtful, curious, and willing to share their knowledge significantly accelerated my growth. I learned not only from formal guidance but also from everyday discussions, technical reviews, feedback, and collaborative problem-solving.

Working with experienced engineers helped me improve the way I approached technical decisions. I became better at explaining my ideas, evaluating trade-offs, receiving feedback, and iterating on solutions.

It also showed me the value of collaboration in engineering.

The best solutions are rarely developed in isolation. They emerge when people with different experiences and perspectives work together, question assumptions, and improve one another’s ideas.

Mentorship That Made a Difference

The mentorship provided through the fellowship was one of the most meaningful parts of the experience.

The mentors were genuinely invested in helping fellows learn and succeed. They created an environment where asking questions was encouraged, experimentation was supported, and mistakes were treated as opportunities to learn.

That kind of guidance is incredibly valuable early in a career.

Good mentorship does not simply provide answers. It helps you learn how to think independently, approach unfamiliar problems, and make better decisions. Throughout the program, I received the support and constructive feedback I needed while still being trusted with meaningful responsibilities.

That balance helped me grow both technically and professionally.

A Work Culture That Encouraged Learning

Capria also had an amazing work culture.

The environment was collaborative, supportive, and focused on learning. I felt comfortable sharing ideas, trying new approaches, and discussing challenges openly.

In a field where tools and technologies change so quickly, having a culture that encourages curiosity makes a major difference. It allowed me to explore innovative solutions without being afraid of getting everything perfect on the first attempt.

The experience showed me what a healthy engineering culture can look like — one where people take their work seriously while also supporting one another’s development.

That is something I will continue to value throughout my career.

How the Fellowship Helped During My Job Search

When I began interviewing for full-time opportunities, I realized how much the fellowship had prepared me.

The projects I worked on gave me meaningful experiences to discuss during interviews. Instead of giving only theoretical answers, I could explain how I had approached actual AI problems, evaluated different solutions, handled technical challenges, collaborated with teams, and delivered projects for real users.

These experiences gave me strong stories to share.

They helped me answer questions about problem-solving, innovation, teamwork, adaptability, and technical decision-making. They also made my résumé stronger because my experience demonstrated that I had worked on practical AI applications rather than only academic or personal projects.

The fellowship played an important role in helping my résumé get shortlisted and gave me greater confidence during interviews.

Most importantly, it contributed to my journey toward securing a full-time role as an AI Engineer at Local Asset Management.

More Than a Fellowship

The Capria Fellowship was an important chapter in my career.

Over eight months, I worked on meaningful projects, explored emerging AI technologies, developed solutions for internal teams and portfolio companies, learned from excellent engineers, and benefited from outstanding mentorship.

The experience helped me understand what it truly means to work as an AI Engineer.

It gave me the technical exposure needed to build better solutions, the professional experience needed to succeed in interviews, and the confidence needed to pursue a full-time career in AI.

I am deeply grateful to the people at Capria who supported, mentored, and trusted me throughout the fellowship.

For anyone beginning their career in artificial intelligence, opportunities like this can be transformative. A strong fellowship does not only teach you how to use technology. It teaches you how to solve problems, collaborate with others, communicate your ideas, and grow into the kind of professional you want to become.

For me, the Capria Fellowship did exactly that — and helped open the door to the next stage of my career.
